"Will Discount Ink Cartridges Ruin Your
Printer And Void Your Warranty?"

Don't Believe Everything The Printer Companies Tell You

I have to admit, as much as I've always hated paying through the nose for replacement ink cartridges, I was a little worried that using anything other than the original brand of ink could wreck my printer.

All the big printer companies really push the fact that discount cartridges are not good for the printer and some even say they can void your warranty.

They say things like they could ruin the printhead or the print quality won't be as good. They threaten that using discount ink could void your warranty. Some of them have even threatened lawsuits over compatible ink cartridges.

It took me a long time to decide to try a less expensive option but once I did, I realized that most of these warnings are really just hype - a way for the printer companies to keep you locked into paying their crazy prices for ink cartridges.

I've used discount cartridges - both remanufactured and refilled - on several brands of printers over the last couple of years (HP, Epson and Canon) and for the most part, they've all worked perfectly fine.

What do I mean "for the most part" you might be asking? Well, I've bought ink from several companies and something I learned was that some of them offer better quality than others. Both in the print quality and reliability of their cartridges and also in the quality of their customer service.

4Inkjets.com

4Inkjets.com is my top choice. I've had excellent results with their cartridges and have never had one that didn't work properly.

They guarantee their ink with a one year money-back guarantee, but I've never had to take them up on it because the cartridges just work. The only disadvantage to their guarantee is that they don't cover shipping, so you have to pay to return the cartridge to them.

They don't have any limits on their returns though, so the guarantee actually holds more weight for me in spite of the shipping cost.

What I really like about their ink is that they use ink that is specifically compatible for each model of printer. Different brands and models of printers can use different types of ink, and they are usually not compatible.

A lot of ink companies use one type of ink for all their cartridges, and they usually don't work very well for any of them. With 4inkjet's cartridges, you'll get ink that is made for your printer so the quality will be just as good as the original ink.

If you visit their site, you'll see all kinds of other "advantages" - ISO standards certification, Bizrate certified, Yahoo 5 Star, etc. Frankly, I couldn't care less about all these things - they're great for helping companies feel good about themselves but all I'm concerned with is how well the cartridges work. And these ones do.

123Inkjets.com

I've had good results with 123Inkjets.com as well. I've only ever had one cartridge that had a problem, and they had it replaced for me quickly, with no hassles.

They also have a one year guarantee, which has both advantages and disadvantages compared to 4Inkjets.com. 123inkjets covers shipping charges, so it doesn't cost you anything to return a cartridge.

The only limitation on their warranty is that any returned cartridge needs to be at least 70% full to qualify for a refund. Most problems with cartridges happen right away, so this would rarely be a problem.

But it can happen that the cartridge breaks down after being used for a while and if you've been using it for a while and it's got less than 70% of the ink left, the guarantee won't work.

Personally, I would rather take the chance of paying for shipping (which isn't much for a small item like a cartridge) than having a cartridge pack it in on me when only half the ink has been used.

Click2Ink.com

Click2Ink's biggest advantage is their price guarantee. If you find an ink cartridge on another website for less money, they will beat the price by a buck.

They only have a 90 day guarantee on their ink however, compared to one year for our top picks. And to get a replacement for a defective cartridge, it needs to be at least 70% full when you return it.

In most cases, a faulty cartridge will show itself fairly soon after you install it, but if you don't print very often and it could be more than 90 days before you realize the cartridge is bad, Click2Ink is not the best choice.

Overall, I would recommend using Click2Ink if you do a lot of printing and their price guarantee will save you some money, or as a secondary source if one of the other websites is sold out of the ink you need.
